Photonic structures are known to have special optical properties which become even more remarkable when made up of materials in whose refractive indices can be interactively changed by various external forces. In this work, we have studied the high-speed optical switching characteristics of a combination of thermochromic vanadium dioxide (VO2) with SiO2 and gold films in a 1-D structure. It is found that such an optical switch can undergo a rapid change in reflectance from 0 to 60% at the wavelength of 1550 nm. This approach can be applied over a wide range of wavelengths for fabrication of dynamic filters for different lasers.
